STATEMENT RE: ASSEMBLY PASSAGE OF FRACKING MORATORIUM

Katherine Nadeau, Water & Natural Resources Program Director

“Too many questions remain concerning fracking’s impact on our public health, environment, and water supply.

“Governor Cuomo and his administration did the public a service by not rushing into any decision on fracking, and pledging in February to wait for the science to be complete and fully vetted before making a decision.

“The Assembly’s passage today of a two-year moratorium on fracking, which requires an independent health impact assessment by one of the schools of public health within the state university system, is exactly the right approach and will ensure this process occurs as it should – by getting answers before making a decision.

“We thank the Assembly for their leadership.”
