Statement on Release of EPA Power Plant Carbon Proposal
Executive Director Peter Iwanowicz
“Carbon pollution is fueling our changing climate and we are all experiencing the impacts. Poor air quality and extreme weather are prime examples of why we need to act.
The Obama Administration is taking a bold step to protect our health and to usher in an era of cleaner energy innovations. As New Yorkers have witnessed, setting standards for power plant carbon pollution improves air quality, ensures investments for energy efficiency and renewable energy, and moves us away from the dirty ways of the past and towards a cleaner, healthier future.
It is clear that the steps previously taken by New York and other states led to the announcement of national standards. But, the power sector is not the only source of pollution fueling climate change. New York’s leaders should embrace the proposed standards and use them to renew our own commitment to further reductions in carbon pollution from all sectors of the economy.”
