Statement from Vanessa Fajans-Turner on Governor Kathy Hochul’s Appointment as Co-Chair of the U.S. Climate Alliance

May 10, 2024

We commend Governor Kathy Hochul on her appointment as co-chair of the U.S. Climate Alliance and applaud her commitment to establishing climate leadership as a central pillar of state governance. This appointment represents a timely opportunity for Governor Hochul to significantly advance New York’s climate agenda, setting a standard for national and international implementation best practices right here at home. Echoing the Governor’s sentiment that we are the first generation to feel the effects of climate change and the last that can effectively address it, Environmental Advocates is eager to collaborate closely with her to seize this moment and drive meaningful progress toward our climate goals.

New York is already poised to set near-term nationwide climate precedents with several legislative opportunities, including the Climate Corporate Data Accountability Act, the Fashion Act, the Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act, the NY HEAT Act, and the TREEs Act. These initiatives lay the groundwork for climate success by promoting transparent reporting, sustainable production standards, capped household energy costs, and environmentally responsible state purchasing practices. These opportunities demonstrate the significant impact Governor Hochul and New York State can have at a time when states are at the forefront of combating the climate crisis.

Just as the opportunities for impact are immense, so are the challenges. EANY is excited to support the Governor in this appointment and helping make this year a transformative period for New York and the country in achieving our shared climate objectives.
