Rep. Katko Turns His Back On Science

Supports leadership on fossil fuel industry giveaway

Albany – Today, just days after Pope Francis appealed for climate leadership, and as world leaders are developing ways to cut carbon emissions, Representative John Katko cast his first climate vote and supported legislation (HR2042) to block implementation of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Clean Power Plan, incite states to ignore federal law, and create a legal boondoggle that would stall climate action for years, if not decades, to come.

The following statement is attributable to Executive Director Peter Iwanowicz:

“It is disappointing that Representative John Katko has turned his back on science and bowed down in the face of industry pressure by voting for legislation to stall climate action even as world leaders are developing and implementing solutions.

Prior to his election, Congressman Katko told the Auburn Citizen that climate change is man-made. Before that he told the Syracuse Post Standard, “I don’t know if it’s a man-made problem or not.” He also said the U.S. should not unilaterally cap carbon emissions – which it’s not. In fact, the European Union and even countries like China have or are in the process of implementing caps. Despite this, he supported a bill that hurts taxpayers, is anti-science, anti-climate and anti-public health.

Congressman Katko sided with his political leaders and an industry that is wantonly harming New Yorkers’ air and public health. He owes his constituents an explanation.”
