Peter Iwanowicz to Lead New York’s Environmental Watchdog
Albany – The state’s green government watchdog, Environmental Advocates NY, is pleased to announce that national climate change and clean air leader Peter Iwanowicz will join the organization as executive director.
Iwanowicz is currently an assistant vice president of the American Lung Association where he directs the Association’s Healthy Air Campaign — an effort to defend the Clean Air Act and push for new clean air protections. The national campaign has built pressure against those in Congress who want to weaken, block or delay clean air protections, as well as support for climate action.
Prior to his time with the American Lung Association, Iwanowicz was the lead voice on environmental and energy issues within New York State government, serving as deputy secretary for the environment under former Governor David Paterson, and later as acting commissioner of the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). In these roles, he secured the final deal for protections of lands in the Adirondacks, established the first-ever limits on pollution from outdoor wood boilers, and created the electronic waste-recycling program.
Iwanowicz also launched the DEC’s Office of Climate Change in 2007 where he led the state’s participation in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). Early in his career, Iwanowicz worked for Environmental Advocates where he was the lead on clean energy and climate issues.
John Buttrick, chairman of Environmental Advocates’ board of directors said, “Peter’s breadth of experience and knowledge of the issues, as well as the workings of state government, are second to none. In the months and years ahead New York must act on climate change and clean energy issues. There is no one better suited to help advocates across the state get action than Peter. He is widely respected and we are delighted that he will be leading Environmental Advocates’ great team.”
Iwanowicz said, “I am thrilled to return to Environmental Advocates to lead its talented staff and dedicated volunteers as it moves ahead to tackle the pressing environmental issues facing New York State. The changes we are experiencing in our climate are harming our health and environment and we urgently need to reduce the pollution causing them and to adopt measures to ensure our communities are resilient to the impacts. Environmental Advocates is well positioned to play a lead role in communicating the need for action and working with policymakers across the state to enact the standards necessary to provide a healthier and more prosperous future.”
Iwanowicz joins Environmental Advocates effective November 7, 2013.
