NYS Passes Groundbreaking Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act
Albany – Today, the New York State Legislature passed the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act. The legislation will transition New York State to a clean energy economy and makes the state a leader in moving off of fossil fuels.
The following statement can be attributed to Peter M. Iwanowicz, executive director of Environmental Advocates NY:
“Today’s action by the State Legislature is a critical step forward in addressing climate change. The Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act will not only move one of the world’s largest economies off of fossil fuels, it begins the conversation on how to make this transition equitably and with justice.
New York has now legally committed itself to the strongest climate and clean energy goals of any U.S. state. This will spur innovation, create green jobs, and make New York a true global climate leader. We are in this position because of the vision, labor, and leadership of frontline communities—specifically the NY Renews coalition—who have worked tirelessly to combat climate change.
We also commend and thank Governor Andrew Cuomo, Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, and the CLCPA sponsors Assemblymember Steve Englebright and Senator Todd Kaminsky, for taking this historic step toward a clean energy future.”
