New PFAS Report Has Big Impacts for State

Today, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) released a Toxicological Profile for Perfluoroalkyls, which reports on exposure to PFAS—a class of chemicals that includes PFOA and PFOS, which have contaminated water sources across New York. The profile significantly lowers the level of exposure to these chemicals that would prevent harm to vulnerable populations.

“The release of today’s report from the ATSDR on PFAS chemicals confirms what has already been abundantly clear – existing federal guidance levels are unsafe. With the Trump administration routinely rolling back public health protections, New York must step up to protect drinking water and public health from the dangers of these chemicals. The Governor’s administration has promised New York would establish a maximum contaminant level for PFOA and PFOS, but the State’s Drinking Water Quality Council tasked to start this process has been stalled for months. The new science is a wakeup call for New York to show true leadership and set a combined MCL for PFOA and PFOS of 4 ppt.”
