In First Climate Vote, Rep. Stefanik Turns Back on New York
Supports leadership on giveaway advanced by fossil fuel industry
Albany – Today, just days after Pope Francis appealed for climate leadership, and as world leaders are developing ways to cut carbon emissions, Representative Elise Stefanik cast her first climate vote and supported legislation (HR2042) to block implementation of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Clean Power Plan, incite states to ignore federal law, and create a legal boondoggle that would stall climate action for years, if not decades, to come.
The following statement is attributable to Executive Director Peter Iwanowicz:
“Despite its cheery name, this backwards legislation does nothing to protect ratepayers. It does, however, undermine our public health and give polluters the green light to foul the air of millions of New Yorkers who live downwind.
There is no wiggle room, you either support clean air or you don’t. It is very disappointing that despite acknowledging the need for climate action prior to her election, Congresswoman Stefanik would now cast her lot with colleagues who reject science and prioritize industry profit over public health.
Leaders worldwide are coming together to find solutions. Congresswoman Stefanik and the House of Representatives’ singular focus is to stall climate action indefinitely. That’s not a solution and she owes her constituents an explanation.”
