Kate Kurera brings more than 15 years of environmental expertise to EANY
Albany – Environmental Advocates NY today announced that environmental policy and law expert Kate Kurera has joined the organization as deputy director. Ms. Kurera is admitted to practice law in New York and Victoria, Australia and has expertise in environmental, climate change, and water law. She joins EA after spending close to eight years living in Melbourne, Australia, where she worked as a solicitor and legislation officer for the State of Victoria. While abroad, she was instrumental in major reforms to State environmental protection, water legislation, and development of first-of-its-kind climate change legislation.
Peter M. Iwanowicz, executive director of Environmental Advocates NY said, “We are thrilled that Kate has joined our team and is working to make New York a cleaner and healthier place to live. This is a critical time for environmental priorities in New York, with opportunities to make real progress in fighting climate change and protecting our air and water. Kate will be a powerful advocate for these and other important measures.”
Before moving abroad, Ms. Kurera was an associate at Booz Allen Hamilton in Washington DC, where she served as an environmental consultant to federal agencies and departments. During her tenure at Booz Allen, she was a subject matter expert in the National Environmental Policy Act; worked extensively with government contaminated land portfolios; and worked on initiatives to site renewable energy projects on federal lands. Ms. Kurera has also worked at the Environmental Protection Agency; the Pace Environmental Litigation Clinic in partnership with Riverkeeper; and the United Nations, where she worked on the impact of climate change on small island states, and within the United Nations Development Programme’s Montreal Protocol and Chemical Division.
Ms. Kurera received her JD with a certificate in environmental law from Pace University, School of Law; her Master of Public Administration in Environmental Science and Policy from Columbia University’s School for International and Public Affairs; and a Bachelor of Arts in Government from Skidmore College.
