Cuomo Pipeline Rejection An Earth Day Victory Against Fossil Fuels
Statement from Environmental Advocates NY Executive Director Peter Iwanowicz
“As world leaders convened in New York City to commit to historic global climate action, Governor Cuomo demonstrated the power that states have in helping to achieve these goals, and the resolute leadership needed to fight climate change.
The Constitution Pipeline was an environmental disaster waiting to happen. For years, through a campaign of scare tactics and misinformation, the oil and gas industry has made expanding fossil fuel infrastructure seem like the only choice. And industry’s economic gain has come at the cost of our water, air, and health. Fossil fuels make people sick; it’s really that simple and clear-cut.
The more than 150 nations who are committed to fighting climate change need local leaders who will act on climate pollution. Governor Cuomo’s decision represents a pivotal moment of turning aspirational goals into action. His decision is nothing short of bold, and Environmental Advocates NY is proud to applaud his decision!”
