Governor Cuomo Announces Ban on Single-Use Plastic Foam Food Containers

2022 Ban Includes Plastic Packing Peanuts

Albany – As part of his 2020 State of the State preview, Governor Cuomo announced a proposal that would ban single-use polystyrene food containers and plastic packing peanuts beginning in 2022.

The following response can be attributed to Kate Kurera, Deputy Director of Environmental Advocates NY:

“Every single-use polystyrene food container and every plastic packing peanut is a scourge that lasts hundreds of years – threatening our health as they persist in our environment. The Governor’s proposal to ban these items in 2022 is a welcome move, but we feel that New York can make progress happen a bit faster and call on this ban to be in effect for 2021, one year earlier. We eagerly await the release of this legislation and look forward to working with the Senate, Assembly, and Governor on a law banning these harmful materials next year.”
