As Congress Prepares Anti-Climate Bill, Eyes on Stefanik Vote
Days after Pope’s release of encyclical, bill in congress would stall climate action
Albany – This week, Congress is expected to vote on legislation (HR2042) advanced by Representative Ed Whitfield (R-Kentucky) to block the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Clean Power Plan, incite states to ignore federal law, and gut the powers of the Clean Air Act.
The following statement is attributable to Executive Director Peter Iwanowicz:
“Congresswoman Stefanik has said the Adirondacks need a strong advocate on climate change. Those remarks will be put to their first test as soon as this week as Congress prepares to take up legislation that would undermine the Clean Air Act and create a legal boondoggle that could block climate action for years to come.
The North Country needs a representative who will fight for clean air. This is Representative Stefanik’s opportunity to walk the talk.
The North Country has experienced the effects of climate change in many ways, such as record-breaking cold temperatures and snowfall, tornados, rain and significant flooding which has harmed the local agricultural industry and placed significant infrastructure burdens on taxpayers.
The consequence of climate change – and inaction in addressing it – are severe and come with a human and economic toll. We urge Congresswoman Stefanik to follow through on her previous remarks, take a stand on climate action, and oppose her colleagues’ backwards proposal.”
