Cuomo Cuts NYC Plastic Bag Law
Statement from Peter Iwanowicz, Executive Director, Environmental Advocates of New York
“Yesterday, DEC Commissioner Seggos called plastic bag waste a ‘scourge’ – today, the Governor granted Senator Simcha Felder’s wish to put the kibosh on the City’s law. It looks like this ‘scourge’ will live on until the Governor works with the Legislature on a solution.
New Yorkers need a plan to reduce plastic bag waste. Governor Cuomo is the one person who can bring the factions together to get a statewide plan passed into law before this year’s legislative session ends in June.
In the Trump Age, state government’s role cannot begin and end with blocking the work of local governments. While it’s been an open secret that Governor Cuomo did not want to deal with this legislation, as the state’s chief executive, he has the opportunity and, now, the responsibility to lead.”
