NYS LEGISLATIVE LEADERS RECOGNIZED FOR PROTECTION NEW YORK'S WATER, LAND & AIR

Environmental Advocates of New York Celebrates State Lawmakers for Supporting Super Bills

(ALBANY, NY) – Environmental Advocates of New York, the state’s government watchdog in Albany, today released the names of members of the New York State Legislature who supported all four of the environmental community’s priority “Super Bills”.

Environmental Advocates of New York is proud to offer our congratulations to those state lawmakers who stepped up and made protecting New York’s precious natural resources a priority in this year=s legislative session,@ said Robert Moore, executive director of Environmental Advocates of New York.

The 2007 Super Bills include:

* The Community Preservation Act. This statewide opt-in bill would give New York municipalities the power to put preservation funding to a local vote, when and if they choose to do so, without first receiving the permission of the legislature.

* The Clean Water Protection/Flood Prevention Act, also known as the ‘wetlands bill’, would close a gaping loophole in wetlands protections across the state.

* The Bigger Better Bottle Bill would update New York’s most successful recycling plan to fit the drinking habits of today’s consumers, and earmark unclaimed deposits for the state’s Environmental Protection Fund.

* The Climate Change Solutions Act & Fund would dedicate money generated in the state’s auction of carbon dioxide emission credits to increase energy efficiency and support clean energy.

The four priority Super Bills were selected by the Green Panel, a group made up of representatives from New York’s leading environmental organizations.

“Environmental Advocates of New York thanks those legislators who supported the Super Bills and would like to especially recognize the 68 members of the State Senate and Assembly who supported all four of the Super Bills,” said Moore.

In the Senate, 2 Republicans and 10 Democrats requested to sponsor all four Super Bills. In the Assembly, where three of the Super Bills passed, 1 Republicans and 55 Democrats voted in their favor.

The attached list names all members of the Assembly and Senate who went four for four on the 2007 environmental Super Bills. Because three of the bills were voted on in the Assembly, the list reflects actual votes in favor on these bills and sponsorship of the remaining Super Bill. In the Senate, the list includes Republicans who co-sponsored all four bills and Democrats who notified us that they officially requested to be listed as co-sponsors.
